Nights.ro Awards 2008

Last day without knowing the results of the Nights.ro Awards 2008.

Without any doubt, Nights.ro Awards are the most important event of the year on the clubbing scene in Romania. All the DJs, VJs, producers, promoters, agents, sponsors, artworkers, club owners work the whole year and they are waiting for the start of the new one so they can see how much love they have from the public side.

It's all about the public in the end of it all. And no matter what are you doing during the year, Nights.ro Awards is about "doing it well". Tonight we are all looking forward for the Nights.ro @ WTP with Special Guest - Samim (live) feat Miguel Toro.

We, The Mission and Studio Martin, as brands, been rewarded many times already at the last year's awards. This is year we are nominee again at many cathegories, but since it's the first time I represent this two brands in front of the clubbers, it's the first time when Nights.ro Awards really matters and I'm very nervous about the results.

Studio Martin is nominee as the Best Club in Romania in 2007 and many parties entered the category Best Club Party in Romania. The Mission is nominee as Best Events Organizer and, as well, its events are included in the Best Event of 2007 - such as The Chemical Brothers @ Sala Polivalenta, Deep Dish @ Arenele Romane etc.

My boys, Livio & Roby, are nominee at the following categories: Livio for Best DJ, Roby for Best Upcoming DJ (since he started to play alone at the end of 2006), Livio & Roby as Biggest Name to Represent Romania outside the country, Monochrome (Livio & Roby feat George G) winning track of Heineken Music Thirst Studio 2007, Pearl, is included as Best Romanian Track of the Year and a couple of their sets - such as Monochrome live @ Nights.ro 6 Years Anniversary Party and Monochrome - Children of House FWD 01 Album Launch @ Studio Martin for the Romanian Set of the Year or Best Club Party. Unfortunately, even if they win or not at any category, Livio & Roby are in Miami playing at the Winter Music Conference, along names like Steve Lawler, Clive Henry, Jamie Jones and Audiofly at the Viva Music party and on the terrace of Stereo Club. So George G will be tonight, at the Awards, waiting for Nights.ro to announce its winners this year.

Good luck everybody, but fingers crossed for the names I represent, mkay? :o)

John Digweed – Transitions Vol 4

John Digweed concludes the first chapter of his Transitions series with a bang…

Since it’s launch Transitions has become one of - if not - the most anticipated releases in the compilation calendar; over the past two years its single disc, twice-yearly format has provided dance music fans a regular, contemporary snapshot of John. Now the first chapter in the Transitions’ series reaches its conclusion with the highly anticipated fourth volume.

“This was perhaps the hardest one yet,” says Digweed, “The proximity between releases meant each new volume was strongly influenced by its predecessor - as we moved from one to the other they had to relate and make sense. ”

So, a real challenge. Just how did John go about tackling it?

“I’ve developed the amount of tracks and layering over the series,” he elaborates, “And we’ve taken it to the next level with this latest volume, it’s the most intense and intrinsic yet, which meant replacements, additions, editing and a lot of time consuming assessments and re-assessments.”

Over the course of 22 tracks and 73 minutes John weaves a unique musical thread. From favourites such as Ink & Needle, Guy J and Pig & Dan through to welcome debuts from Henry Saiz, Myers Briggs or Soliquid, all are concisely constructed in the mix to the point where 3 are often playing at anyone time. Infact, due the resulting complexity, John decided to re-structure the trackmark points to better reflect the more developed passages – and so 22 records became 10 (see full tracklist below), as he elaborates, “In trackmarking this way I am able to highlight the unique qualities of the mix. Whilst it hopefully retains that signature Digweed sound, I’ve used modern production techniques to create an album that’s unlike anything you’ll ever hear me do in a club.”

And the future? “Let’s keep it about this latest volume for now,” John affirms, “Otherwise I think I’d be doing it a disservice!” We couldn’t agree more: Transitions Vol.4 is one of the most original compilations you’ll hear this year and a fitting finale to the series in its current guise…

John Digweed – Transitions Vol.4 is out late April 2008.

Marc Romboy 'Contrast'

"Contrast" by Marc Romboy
Released June
Systematic Recordings

Systematic label head Marc Romboy brings his second album 'Contrast' into existence.

'Contrast is the dissimilarity or difference between things.'

The single to accompany the album will be 'Fly Away' - released 14 May.

Album tracklisting:
1. The Beat - Vs. Chelonis R. Jones
2. Fly Away - Vs. Blake Baxter
3. Iceland
4. Ey Mind - Vs. Mr. K-Alexi
5. Karamabolage
6. Side FX - Vs. Chelonis R. Jones
7. Acid Love - Vs. Mr. K-Alexi
8. Sonora
9. Luna's World
10. Elif

"It has been stated and it's one of my life philosophies that a human needs contrasts to be happy. Apart from this I really think that the tracks on the album are like a contrast too. When you listen to 'Sonora' and afterwards to 'Elif', it is a high contrast. But I like it [contrast], and I hate to repeat myself, which is why I always have to produce new things and ideas, so that it's hard to put me in one category." - Marc Romboy

Romboy's second album, following his brilliant debut LP 'Gemini' released in 2006, sees an electronic album of collaborations with some of dance music's most excellent vocalists. Chelonis R. Jones - known for releases on Get Physical and for his collaborations with Röyksopp - contributes on two releases. Blake Baxter - a regular Romboy collaborator who has also released on Kevin Saunderson's KMS imprint, Tresor, Disko B and Underground Resistance - adds his vocals to 'Fly Away'. And Mr. K-Alexi - one of Chicago's finest who has also collaborated with artists including Larry Heard, Robert Owens, Will Smith and Felix Da Housecat, lends his voice to two tracks on the album.

"The style of the album is simply electronic music with soulful elements and Detroit/Chicago techno/house influences.. I've chosen all these collaborations because I love to include soul into the electronic music I make. And the warm and emotional voices of these people contribute exactly what I love. I couldn't make instrumental tracks with a computer only. Sometimes yes, but working with voices is always a beautiful thing." - Romboy

The sound of Get Physical goes on the road this spring rock and roll style, with 2 of its shiniest stars M.A.N.D.Y. and Heidi playing at every show. Exciting British/Italian production duo Audiofly will be joining the tour from May 5th – May 10th while the phenomenal Booka Shade will also be guesting on April 24th @ Mezzanine, San Francisco.

The land mark tour kicks off in spectacular form in Miami on March 27th @ Studio A with a mind-blowing line up including M.A.N.D.Y., Heidi, Tiefshwarz, Junior Boys, Noze and Italoboyz. Beatport is on board as the title sponsor and will be offering special Get Physical download packages at each tour date.

The opening party is a repeat of the WMC showcase which was both sold-out and the most talked about event of 2007 featuring M.A.N.D.Y., Booka Shade, Heidi, Claude Vonstroke, Jesse Rose and Dixon. The rest of this tour follows with a similarly impressive host of treats including conceptual visuals and décor; thus bringing the true Get Physical European vibe to America for the first time. Get Physical usually reserves events of this scale for the likes of Sonar in Barcelona and Watergate in Berlin.

A tour of this magnitude proves Get Physical is at the pinnacle of new wave, cutting edge labels. Achieving something unique it retains the independent vibe while effortless bridging the gap with the hipster kids and the fanatical dance followers, pioneering the way for the next generation of dance music fans and stars alike.

With acts such as M.A.N.D.Y., Booka Shade, DJ T, Samim and Heidi signed to its roster Get Physical is often home to some of the biggest tracks at any given moment.

After launching at WMC there are 15 dates over a short space of time with intense touring from late April until mid-May. Part of this extravaganza’s ground will be covered on a tour bus. Following the tour will be the usual media circus and dedicated M.A.N.D.Y. admirers that seem to surround them at every turn. M.A.N.D.Y, Heidi and co will be playing to over 20,000 people in the duration of the tour.

You can get tales from the road, updated blogs and pictures at www.getphysicaltour.com. You can find more info on the special Get Physical USA Tour website or myspace page.

The Mission Dance Event - 3 headliners announced

The Mission Dance Event will take place this summer on the Black Sea Coast on the beach called Hanu Piratilor, placed in Mamaia Nord, and it will be hold during two nights - 11th of 12th of July 2008.

Line up by far is:
Day 1 - 11.07.08
Roger Sanchez

Day 2 - 12.07.08
Fatboy Slim
Timo Maas

+ many, many others tba

Hopefully, by the end of the week, the second headliner of Day 1 of The Mission Dance Weekend will be confirmed & announced. Even if there are many other events I am looking fwd to see until July, this is definitely my favorite place to rock this summer!
This is the perfect time to remind ourselves how was when The Mission brought for the first time in Romania Fatboy Slim at Ultima Playa beach on Black Sea Coast, back in 2006, when 22,000 clubbers bang their heads and jumped on Norman's music.

A little funny chit chat with Lee Burridge

This is an interview with Lee Burridge that I took after the 1st of May parties on the Black Sea Coast in Mamaia, Romania. He played with his friend Bill Patrick at La Mania club and then at the beach, over & over again. Even forgot to eat. Lee is always great fun so a "classic" interview would of been boring. Prepare yourself for a great laugh with Lee Burridge.

Miss Foggy: What was the most wicked night when u got the most fucked up ever?
Lee Burridge: So many to choose from. I remember once in Thailand, we had been rocking out for three days and had dropped loads of Acid. We were in a club called The Backyard' which is up in the jungle. It really is a huge shack that doesn't have walls, just pillars holding up the roof and a large balcony that looked down from the hill onto a beach. The decks and mixer are set up and a snooker table and the speakers regularly caught fire or blew up. It's really cool. I wasn't DJing but my friend was.I was with another friend having fun, laughing and hanging out. The acid was really strong and when I looked up everyone had vanished apart from their eyeballs. So I'm in the club with three hundred pairs of eyes surrounding me and I start to get a bit weird. I decided to concentrate on the back of the bass speaker for a while and watch it vibrating. Eventually everyone returned at which point I look at my friend DJing. He decided (unwisely) at that point to try and mix 3 records together. Bad idea! So there he is with his headphones all twisted round his head, straining, and the three tracks mixing badly together sounding like a drum kit being kicked down the stairs. He had this deranged look on his face which said 'please help me' when CRACK!!! the headphones broke and flew off his head in different directions. The drum kit continued to clank and clatter down the stairs and my friend looked wildly around him for the remnants of the exploded headphones. He found one side with the tiniest piece of plastic attached to hold on to and proceeded to try and save the mix. He pulled down two of the faders and then ........silence! The third fader he left up was the record that had just finished. I, as a concerned friend was rolling around on the floor crying with laughter. That was a rather fucked up day/night!

MF: Did u ever had sex in the DJ booth?
LB: Yes. It's on my rider that the promoter must supply one sex girl everywhere I play to do naughty stuff to me in the DJ booth.

MF: What was the craziest gift u ever received from Bill?
LB: He was one of the sex girls. That's actually how we met, while he was giving me his gift.

MF: If u would be forced to play in a club's restroom, what would u play?
LB: Trance, as that music belongs in the toilet.

MF: Describe Peanut in three words and tell me who loves her the most.
LB: Ball. Turkey. Sleep. That's her life. She is by far the cutest dog ever. Who loves her the most? Anyone who meets her apart from Mexican people as she's a racist and growls and bites Mexicans. We don't know why.

MF: What's your biggest dream at the moment?
LB: To help Bill make it and get the recognition he deserves. Also doing that weightless thing in a plane where they simulate zero gravity would be pretty cool.

MF: What do you think about Bill? Describe him.
LB: He has an amazing taste in music and is my favorite victim to pick on when we are partying. He has trouble pronouncing the two words "Iraqi War" when fucked up. He says...IWAKI WAAAHH. He is just as bad and irresponsible as me which is good. He really will be a famous DJ in the next few years. He loves Desperate Housewives and Star Trek the next generation and believes in Ghosts. He faints if he sees blood and is scared of mice. He told me once that he liked a Shakira song and always cries when he watches Mrs Doubtfire (just like Little Mike). His favorite color is beige. He joined the Scientologists because he wanted to meet Tom Cruise. When he was growing up he liked to pretend he was Maverick from Top Gun when he was playing vollyball on Long island beach and that lead to the life long obsession he has with Tom to this very day. He used to have sign that said 'TUNE!' on one side and 'It's not over yet' on the other that he put above his head at the Paul Oakenfold parties he went to. When him and his friends DJ'd under the name 'the 112 crew' Bill was the number 2. He never logs off of Myspace and has an unhealthy obsession with Beef Jerky.

MF: What was your last nightmare? (not in real life – but like dreaming nasty stuff)
LB: I don't go to sleep so don't have them! I actually had a DJ dream/nightmare that comes back every now and again. It's always me DJing in fromt of lots of people but all I can find are bad records and I spend so long looking for a good record that the one playing finished and it's silent and I then put on another bad one. Was that a dream?

MF: What have you ate at the sea side?
LB: E's, branches and leaves.

MF: What's the thing you dislike most at a hotel room?
LB: I'll tell you about the hotel at the Black Sea Coast. I'd been awake and partying Friday night in Dublin and then flew to Bucharest. I drove down to La Mania and played from around 3 am until 1 pm. We then ended up at kudos where Bill and I played for another 10 hours until 1 am when we decided to go out to Marco Corolla. Around 5 am Monday morning Bill and I realized we were very hungry but had no money so a very kind dance music fan purchased us some food in the super market which we then took back to my room. It was then I realized the sun was coming up...shit!...the curtains are so white in the rooms of the hotel that it's actually darker sleeping with them open!.I hate white curtains!!!

MF: What's the worst thing that could happen to you while playing? And what do you dislike the most while playing?
LB: I dislike nothing. I love playing. When I used to play in Thailand the equipment was so ghetto that I used to get electric shocks every ten minutes. That was pretty bad!

MF: Who's your current superstar?
LB: The man who bought Bill and I food outside the Supermarket

MF: Who's the worst DJ you ever heard playing?
LB: Hmm...so many to chose from. I would say any of the DJ's who play from the wallet not from the heart. If you want names I think Judge Jules is pretty terrible.

Luciano to mix Fabric 41?

For the moment it's just a rumor that appeared on RA after seeing the Fabric website where it's the cover artwork uploaded on the press area. Even if we got used to see funny faces on the covers of the Fabric compilations, Luciano's looks like a small corner of paradise. The rumor isn't confirmed anywhere, not even on Luciano's myspace. Looking forward for the official announcement on this compilation and eventually a tracklist. C'mon Luciano! We need this Fabric 41 from you!
